TEDxHeritageGreen (TEDxHG) has reinvented how a TEDx organization can make a difference, even in a world where traditional in-person events haven’t been recommended. We’re not just an annual conference in Greenville, SC. In 2020, we launched an ongoing, status-quo-nudging, multi-experience online initiative for intimate and worthwhile learning, insight, and conversation. Our offerings have been a season of community experiments that will culminate in our 2021 flagship conference—a multi-session virtual experience on April 23, 25, and 27.

What is TED and TEDx?
TED is a global nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. It began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost almost any topic you can imagine. TEDx is a licensing program in which live TED-like presentations are shared with local communities around the world. Each TEDx organization is unique, developing and executing their events independently.
Can you tell me more about TEDxHeritageGreen?
TEDxHG derives its name and spirit from a long-established public resource in the heart of Greenville, SC. Heritage Green is a cultural campus that provides a vibrant place of discovery, inspiration, creativity, and entertainment for Greenville County residents and visitors of all ages and walks of life. We've got a keen eye on that TEDx spirit that you know and love, providing a platform for varied topics and voices within many disciplines, free of commercial, religious, and political agendas.
In addition to delivering impactful ideas within a TED-like formula, TEDxHG is also driven to...
🔶support messages with impactful experiences and engagement,
🔶attract untapped audiences,
🔶spur respectful, open conversation among individuals who may not normally interact, and
🔶provide avenues for individual or collective action.
Why did you start a second TEDx organization in Greenville?
It didn't begin as a TEDx effort. It was born out of an informal chat about how to spark epiphanies in individuals and aid understanding, empathy, and engagement among diverse groups of people—especially those who rarely, if ever, come together as equals in a psychologically safe, open environment. As supporters and former leaders of TEDxGreenville, Lisa (licensee/organizer) and Caroline (co-organizer) saw an alignment with TED and TEDx ideals, so it was a natural fit to land on bold, experimental event design as a way to influence insight and growth. We favored a status-quo-busting, direct, assertive-yet-respectful—and inevitably uncomfortable—approach.
The edgy vision didn't feel exactly right for the esteemed TEDx platform already existing in our fair city... but what if TEDxGreenville had an incorrigible little sister?
Cities all over the globe have more than one TEDx organization, working in concert to elevate and widen the movement in their regions. We look forward to this collaboration in Greenville!
What's the connection with Heritage Green?
During early explorations, we chatted with The Children's Museum of the Upstate (TCMU) about holding our in-person event at their location on the Heritage Green cultural campus. As a well-known public place of discovery, inspiration, creativity, and entertainment, Heritage Green would be a fitting inspiration for our organization's name.
TED approved our license in February, just before COVID-19 became very, very real in the USA. We pivoted into virtual spaces, but as we emerge into the “real world” again, we’ll explore future partnerships with Heritage Green entities.
How did you do TEDx in the middle of a pandemic?
We got creative! 2020 was a time of reinvention for all of us, and TEDx-ers around the world began innovating like crazy. Over the course of our license period, which extends through April 2021, TEDxHeritageGreen has focused on multiple virtual, pandemic-safe experiences that will culminate in a spring splash event featuring our official TEDx Talks.
In 2020, we hosted over 15 virtual TED Circles, an open mic event, and TEDxHeritageGreenWomen. We’re heartened to see that our mission is resonating with so many!
May I apply to be a speaker?
We do not have an application procedure. Since Greenville is lucky to have an established nomination and vetting process via our friends at TEDxGreenville, we encourage you to submit information there. TEDxHeritageGreen's approach is to identify themes, issues, and topics of broad value to our community, and then find presenters who are uniquely qualified to weigh in.
May I suggest an issue or topic for TEDxHeritageGreen to address?
Yes, please! Email hello@tedxheritagegreen.com with the word SUGGESTION in the subject line. Share any details that may clarify your topic suggestion—your thought process, examples, and links, for example.
May I apply to be a performer?
We launched the experimental TEDxHeritageGreen 2021 Artists Project in which artists collaborated to create performance videos for our flagship conference. We may do this again… stay tuned.
